Summer Reading Help

Q1. What information do I need to sign-up?

When you sign-up online on the Summer Reading site, you are required to enter your name, age, borough, closest library branch (see information below) and choose a screen name (what's this?) and password. If you think that you will forget your screen name and password, write it down and keep it in a safe place.

If you sign-up with a paper form, your screen name will include your first name, last name and birth date. For example, if John Smith signed up and was born on November 9, his screen name would be "johnsmith1109". Likewise, your password will be the word “read” (do not use the quotes). The first time you login, you will be asked to change your password. You may also update your information in the “Update Your Setting” section.

How do I choose my closest library branch or home library?

Your home library can be:

  • The library you go to the most;
  • The library closest to your home;
  • The library you can walk to.

If you are away, it is the library that you can go to pick up your prize and certificate at the end of the summer.

Q2. Why is it important to remember my login information?

As you enter books read in your book log, the librarian will keep track of them. Ask your librarian about special activities and incentives for Summer Reading participants at your home branch. If you forget your login information, you won't be able to add more book logs to your total and your home library won’t get credit for all the books that you read during the summer.

NOTE: If you choose to register again, then your count will start at ZERO. So please try your best to remember your login information!

Q3. Why should I enter an e-mail address?

If you signed-up online it is highly recommended that you enter an e-mail address. This is because if you forget your password, you will be able to click on the “Forgotten Password” link to have your password sent to you. If you do not have an e-mail address, you will need to ask the librarian at your home library to reset your password.

If you signed-up with a paper form, you should login (see Q1 above) and click on the “Update Your Settings link” and then enter your e-mail address on the form. If you do not enter an e-mail address, you will need to ask the librarian at your home library to reset your password.

Q4. I forgot my screen name.

If you forgot your screen name, follow these directions:

  1. Speak to the Librarian at your home library and tell him or her that you have forgotten your Summer Reading screen name.
  2. Show some identification. (Your library card is ok to show!)

Once the Librarian has found the information, he or she will write it down for you. Please try to remember it for the next time!

Q5. I forgot both my screen name AND my password.

If you have forgotten both then follow these directions:

  1. Speak to the Librarian at your home library and tell him or her that you have forgotten your Summer Reading screen name AND your password.
  2. Show some identification. (Your library card is ok to show!)
  3. If you remember, let the Librarian know the branch name you registered under.

The Librarian will look up your screen name and will reset your password for you. The next time you login, change your password. Please try to remember your screen name and password for the next time you login!
